$1 billion an hour

Under our new “Era of Responsibility,” Congress and the president have racked up quite a tab. As Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell noted this morning:

In just 50 days, Congress has voted to spend about $1.2 trillion between the stimulus and the omnibus. To put that in perspective, that’s about $24 billion a day, or about $1 billion an hour — most of it borrowed. There’s simply no question: Government spending has spun out of control.

And we’re only 50 days into the new “era.”

Suitably Flip notes that when you include interest and the amount of time Congress actually spends working, the tab is more like $18 billion an hour. Flip also makes a great connection of government to prostitution.

The Only Republican in San Francisco has some more fun with the math. Congress is spending $80 of each working American’s paycheck each day! Eight dollars of every hour you work actually goes to Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.

I don’t know whether to laugh or go outside and throw up. Oh, but we’ll get to fiscal responsibility in next year’s budget.

I feel so reassured.
