Pic of the Week No. 4

I realize this didn’t become the weekly thing I had hoped, but let’s try again.

This picture is actually old, from sometime in 1999 or 2000 I think. It was taken by my friend Dustin outside The Telescope office at Palomar College.

Why put the picture up now? In a few short weeks The Telescope will no longer live in the “temporary” bungalow the college erected more than 20 years ago, in Room TCB-1 (I like to tell people the TCB stands for the “Tom Chambers Building”). The newspaper office is moving across campus.

I’ve been there this summer packing up — and it’s weird. For nearly 10 years that small newsroom has been my retreat. As a student, I spent more time there than at home, work or in class. Since then, I’ve been there nearly weekly, if not more (there was a gap this spring, I admit).

Packing up the books, organizing archived copies of the paper, taking awards and infamous designs off the walls — has all been bitter sweet. There’s more memories in that place for me than nearly anywhere else.

Granted, the program is getting better digs. But I’m going to miss going to TCB-1 on the top of the campus for my college journalism fix.

I know what you mean. That was my home for three years.
